Gardening American Style

I had a great day working (web sites, programming, and emails for consulting projects) and doing the second half of the day homeschooling while Raechelle had the rest of the day off.  It is one of those days that feels like the reason you are born.  Each action has meaning.  When you decide to do something you work on it in an unattached fashion where you make progress and when something gets in the way of progress you don’t get stressed out.

Then, around 3:45 I had finished just about all the work I needed to so I figured I’d do a little planning for the garden we’re going to plant in the side yard this spring.  I had the kids do the measurements last weekend while I drew and wrote.  This digram was the end result:

Simple.  The plan is to plant sunflowers on that front area, outside the rows.  That front area is at the bottom of the hill, in the front/side yard before the road in front of the house.  Then have 3 rows 3 ft. apart with a walking path across the rows in the middle and, of course, between them.  It seemed really “farmey”.  I’ll have to add a couple of pictures of the space in the comments.

So, as you can see, the space is a 10x30x6 trapezoid.  I’m pretty happy with the size.  I hope to grow corn, beans, cucumbers, tomatoes, and swiss chard.  Later in the evening I remembered that I’ve often thought about the planting practices I’ve hear the native americans had where they would plant corn and beans together.  I like the idea.  I did a web search and found this amazingly insightful site:

A quick review of her diagrams for how to bring corn, beans, and squash together mean one thing: I need to draw a new plan for the garden.

I was just reading over this post, preparing a follow up on the progress of the garden and I realized I reversed North and South in the drawing! When you see my later post on a $0 scrap cold frame that will matter! More to come.
